Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

The Smallest Words

Go. Do. Be.

Sometimes it’s the smallest words that make the biggest impact. Jesus didn’t call us to do big things. He called us to do small things faithfully–that is with full faith.

And even thought they are small, they somehow cause me the most pause.

When He says GO I wonder what that means for me with my family of five with jobs and school and life.

When He says DO I think about all the things on my daily list and surely that must be enough. But I’ll add a few items for good measure.

When He says BE I try to be everything to everyone all the time.

He says small and I think big.

What if I stopped? What if I just stopped trying, striving, going BIG? What would it look like?

When He says to “Go and make disciples” what if I stopped thinking I can’t do that because I am here, my life is here? What if I thought of GO as when I go about my life? When I go to the store or work or to lunch?

When He says to “Do unto others” what if I stopped trying to out do everyone around me and only gave what I so long for: love and grace?

When He says to “Be still” what if I stopped trying to control life and stood in the middle of it? What if I just stopped–stopped trying, stopped asking, stopped praising, stopped complaining, stopped grasping and stood still soaking in the knowing?

Small words carried out in faith yield big results.

Maybe it’s time we started thinking small and let Him think big.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.
