Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

The War of Normal and Extraordinary

I like to feel normal. I like to know that I fit in and that what I do and where I live, what I wear and how I act fits in to some imaginary mold to make me just like everyone else. I don’t want to stand out.

I want to be extraordinary. I want to shine and sparkle and capture attention. I want to be beautiful and charismatic and different from everyone else in their ordinary sameness.

I’m not sure how these two extremes coexist within this one body, mind, heart. No wonder I’m at war with myself more often than not.

Deep inside each of us is this battle, but it’s not about normal versus extraordinary. It’s not about being part of the crowd or standing on a pedestal.

Deep inside each of us is the desire to belong and the desire to be special.

We were created to long for connection, a link to something other than ourselves that shows that we are part of something bigger. We long for reassurance and knowing that we are okay just as we are. If we are just like everyone else, then surely we are ok, right?  Somehow we’ve confused this longing to belong with fitting in.

We were also created as unique, masterpieces. We are all extraordinarily special. There is something about you and something about me that is different and magnificent. But we’ve clouded this truth with the struggle of pride versus humility. We’ve lost sight of our innate unique beauty and lost it in a field of trying too hard and self-doubt.

I’m here to remind you, or to tell you what you’ve never heard. You belong and you are special. They are two heads of the same coin and we are all richer than we know.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  3. It’s easy to forget we all have something unique about ourselves, creating the need to be reminded just to feel special. Great post to remind us to believe in ourselves more, for we do stand out and belong to something.

Thank you Javier. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that we are special and that we belong. Thanks for your thoughts!

How blessed I am that Joyce told me about this site, Becky. After sampling one essay, I’m motivated to go back and read all. But just this one convinces me that you have exceptional writing — and thinking — ability. Keep it up!
