It Is a Choice
Hello, beautiful blue house. My words sound fake as I come up my driveway, but I hope that the more I say them the more I’ll believe them.
You see, I don’t live in a 3000 square foot with dormers and flower boxes. My driveway isn’t perfectly paved and my lawn has more weeds than grass. My girls share a room and there are scuff marks everywhere. There is a project list a mile long with a budget that struggles to breathe.
But in all this….in all this….
I have a home. It has heat and electricity. It’s my favorite color and holds my favorite people. It’s got room to stretch out and has water running right inside. There are cozy spots to snuggle and dirty spots ignored because the snuggle is more important. There are beds and clothes and heat and food. There is a yard to play in and kids to dig it up. It is full.
Gratitude is all about perspective. When we’re so busy looking at everything everyone around us appears to have, our navel gazing can leave us dissatisfied. But when we stop thinking about the things we don’t have and shift our focus to the things we do, well that can change everything.
So I chose something that I found myself envying about others and I decided to speak gratitude about what I do have. There are houses far more beautiful that mine. Houses that are old and weathered in the best possible way and houses that are new and fresh. And there is my house. The house I’ve been given. And I am speaking words of thanks for this house because the truth is that I am grateful, sometimes I just forget to look up.
About Becky Hastings
I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.
