Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

The Words I Wish You Could Hear

I watch you toiling through the day and I remember a time that was more smiles than today. Sometimes I wonder if I took the best of you, but I know that’s not true. Because everything good about you has been honed and refined into something even better.

Only you don’t see it.

You wear glasses that carry the wrong prescription. Your coke bottle lenses give the illusion of help when they really are hurting you. Because those lenses, they’re like a fun house mirror and soon you won’t know what’s real and what’s not.

Maybe it’s better you close your eyes for a bit. Stop trying to see and fix and solve. Just close your eyes and be.

Be in Him.

Rest there.

I know you’ll say you can’t rest, there’s too much to do. But here’s the thing I hate to say, but someone needs to:

Unless you do it with Him, it will never get done.

He wants to help you with the whole thing. The school decisions and the missing sock, the dinner menu and the discipline gone wrong, the missed date nights and the tempers burning hot.

He never wanted you to do it alone. We think we need to try, to do, to go. We add these verbs as if they give us motion and adjectives as if they give us value. But they’re meaningless. God described himself in two words: I am. If we are made in His image, what does that make us?

It’s so simple you won’t believe it.

You are.

It’s that simple. There’s no need for descriptors or explanation. You are. And that is enough.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Becky, I love this simple reminder of simply being. I think as women, it is one of the most difficult concepts to fully rest and reside in because we are such doers. This was a great reminder for me today! Dropping by from Coffee for Your heart:)
