Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Grip the Wheel

Sometimes I feel like I am waiting for the tide to turn. Waiting for a shift in the season. Waiting for a big imaginary wheel to change direction so that this place I’m in won’t feel so stuck. This place of wondering, uncertainty, pain.

But the waiting is where I’ve got it wrong.

Sometimes you can’t just wait for things to turn. You have to get up and grip the wheel. You can’t always wait for life to change course so that you’ll be headed to smooth seas. You have to be the one to try.

So, I stand here before this enormous wheel that I’ve looked upon for so long. I plant my feet and take hold, gently at first. Then I realize the turn won’t come without a fight. I dig in my heels and clinch my fists. I press everything I have into that wheel.

And it won’t budge.

It would be easy to say I tried. To throw in the towel and walk away, waiting for the turn to come in it’s own time.

But easy doesn’t get you where you want to go.

When things feel hard, sometimes that’s just a chance to see what you’re made of. Press in. Sweat. Hold tight. Even the slightest turn can change the whole course.

I’m linking up with Five Minute Friday today, a place where we can let go of the rules and the pressure and write our heart on the page for 5 minutes.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. It may not budge now, but keep tugging. It’s like that annoying jar of jam in the back of the fridge that’s locked shut… eventually it WILL come loose. You may just need a friend to help tug it with you for a bit until it does. 🙂

Here via Five Minute Friday… have a lovely weekend.

  2. Oh, Becky … just loved and so related to this. The battle between easy and hard – throwing in the towel and pressing on. You are right, easy doesn’t get us where we need to go. I’m holding tight with you! Thank you for sharing your words. Just stopping by from FMF. 🙂
