Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

I Did Something Against The Rules

I didn’t plan it. It wasn’t penciled in or entered on my phone calendar. There was no method or purposeful reasoning. I just made a spontaneous choice and committed to it. What is this shocking thing that is so foreign?

I took a week off from writing.

Now before we go any further, I understand that you should write daily. I recognize the need, especially for new writers, to develop good habits. I know the best way to be a writer is to write.

But for me, last week, the best way to be a writer was to live.

It took putting the pen down, stepping away from the keyboard and choosing to put distance between myself and the written word, at least my own written word, to remember the pull deep within me to write.

What did I do instead?

I spent time with my family.

I read.

I relaxed.

I invited friends over.

I watched tv.

I slept in.

I walked.

We need to make time to step away from our art to remember why it's important. Click To Tweet

And today I remember. Remembering feels good. As my fingers hit the keys and I look over my editorial calendar I feel excited and peaceful at the same time. I feel like I can breathe through words instead of pushing through them.

In this world of go, go, go, bigger, faster, better it’s easy to get swept up in the current. Take a chance and step out of the water and just watch it. Look at it from a different place. Quiet that part of your life and experience the other parts of who you are.

Life & Art

Step back away from the river and climb a mountain. Look at things from a different perspective. It doesn’t mean you abandon the river. It doesn’t mean you abandon your call. Sometimes the best thing for your call is to choose to look at it differently. Then you can see how to embrace it fully in new and exciting ways.

Here’s to dancing my way back to the river.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.
