Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Have We Forgotten What Jesus Said? Part 3

This is the third and final post in this series. You can click to read Part 1 and Part 2.

We’ve spent a few weeks together looking at verses in Matthew that can challenge us beyond our comfort to take action in the things Jesus tells us to do.

Four words that look so innocent are some of the hardest things Jesus has called me to do. Even with His assurance to be with us, it can feel uncomfortable to go, make, baptize and teach. Even when I read the words again I think big.

When I see GO, I think Africa.

When I see MAKE, I think a congregation.

When I see BAPTIZE, I think of a river full of people.

When I see TEACH, I see a pulpit facing endless rows of people.

What if it’s not what He’s asking us to do that’s hard? What if it’s our interpretation? I don’t see anywhere in the verses where it gives the same pictures I have. I just see the verbs.

So, is it possible to start small? Does that make it any less obedient?

What if GO means to your neighbor just to share a batch of cookies?

What if MAKE means encouraging a lonely friend to seek God?

What if BAPTIZE means one single person?

What if TEACH means by example rather than a whiteboard?

Are these any less significant?

If God has called you to Africa or a pulpit, then please do that. But if this whole action idea feels new and uncomfortable just start. Start small and see where God takes you. Even the biggest fire begins with a spark. Make a spark.

We all have the ability to Do Something. What will you do today?

Linking words today.

  1. Confession…I LOVED your post, but I just spent like 30 minutes watching the Matthew West video! For some reason, I never really caught the lyrics until today! THANK YOU!!!!

That’s so funny Bethany! I’ve done that before; a sing a song and sing a song and then all of the sudden the words hit me one day! And thank you!

  2. Amen Becky!! Those verbs leave a lot up to our interpretation but the fact remains that we should all be engaged somehow in furthering the kingdom. Thanks for the challenge today!

      Thanks Heather!

  3. You are so right! We too often allow ourselves to be paralyzed into doing nothing. We think we can’t make a difference, but God can through us!
