Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

God Uses All Things, Even Bacon

Bacon has been in the news this week. After some extensive study it has been found that it, among other processed meats, can cause cancer. I’ll wait a moment while you register your surprise.

The truth is that most of us aren’t surprised by this. It seems like there are a lot of things in this world that have negative effects. Yet, I’m still going to eat bacon. Not because I live on the edge, but because there are plenty of times in my life when I choose comfort or pleasure or immediate gratification instead of looking at long-term possibilities.

It happens everyday.

When I choose to yell at my kids instead of speak to them.

When I choose the bacon over the broccoli.

When I say I’m fine when nothing in me is.

When I go my own way instead of God’s way.

Somehow in life we’ve gotten used to choosing the immediate feel good over the long-term is good. And I can beat myself up for every single mess up. But that’s where grace comes in.

Because grace.

Because God.

It’s really that simple. It may not make sense, but it doesn’t change it’s truth. No matter how often we choose the wrong thing, God is there with the grace we need. We just need to receive it.

And for the record, I’m still going to eat bacon. Because bacon.

The prompt for today was bacon. It felt foreign and weird to me, but I went with it because that’s what this whole process is all about. And it did amaze me that God could use such a strange, yet delicious word to show me something about Him.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Great point, Becky! Quite honestly, these days there’s hardly a thing that you put in your mouth that doesn’t have something wrong with it. Guess the key is to not go overboard crazy…..with all things, moderation, sprinkled with grace!

  2. Hello, Becky!
What a great reminder to choose the “best” over the “feels good”!
I could understand the awkwardness you felt over the topic; I felt strange, too! 🙂 But I love the way you put it, that even this word can show us something about Him! Isn’t He amazing?!
