Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

To The One Who Feels Like Their Life Is Plain

I don’t like vanilla ice cream. I won’t even choose chocolate, and I love chocolate. For me, there has to be something in it. Cookies or chips or chunks. Something to dress it up, spice it up, make it better. I want the wow factor. It seems a lot of us do.

Maybe that’s why our vanilla looking lives can seem rather plain. Have you ever been there? Felt plain, simple, unexciting and unnoticed?

Maybe you’re home with littles. Doing laundry, so much laundry, and making yet another peanut butter and jelly sandwich wondering what happened to your life.

Maybe you’re working. Punching a time card wishing you could be anywhere but here, wishing you could do something that actually mattered.

Maybe you’re lost. Uncertain of which direction to turn and feeling like every option is impossible and exhausting and makes you want to cry.

Maybe you’re looking around and everyone else seems to have more fun, more friends, more excitement, more romance.

I have to tell you something, friend. Lean in close because it’s something we all need to hear sometimes.

You are seen.

In those places where things feel so ordinary and that hidden part of your heart is crying out for the extraordinary, God sees you. And He loves what He sees.

No matter where you are or what you are doing in your life there is value. I could list the reasons why changing diapers and doing laundry is valuable. I could tell you why working at that job has a purpose. I could remind you that not everything in other people’s lives is as it seems.

But that won’t get to the heart of the issue.

Holy Ground

It can be Africa dirt or a small town sidewalk. Maybe it’s a dirt road in the woods or a cheap carpeted hall in an office building. Every piece of ground belongs to God, and everywhere you walk has the potential for holiness. Click To Tweet

Sometimes God calls us to small things. Sometimes the small things are the most important. When you feel like your life is plain, vanilla, boring just remember that God uses it all.

It’s odd, isn’t it? Every time something happens, something else happens. That’s called the butterfly effect…That means every little thing YOU do matters: what you did yesterday, what you do today, and what you do tomorrow. God made your life so important that every move you make, every action you take, matters…and not only for you or the people around you. Everything you do matters for everyone and for all time.

The Boy Who Changed The World, Andy Andrews

You matter.

Who you are makes a difference in this world.

Believe it today.

Walk on holy ground.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

Thank you for this enlightening article.
Some days do feel “plain” even though
I’m richly blessed and so grateful for
all the Lord has given me. I now have
more time to read, write, pray, study,
etc….than I’ve ever had. Thanks for the
reminder that not everyday is, or has
to be, spectacular. I choose to see the
blessing in the small “ordinary” things,
rather than always reaching for the
big things. I have a great family and
more time to spend with the Lord. What
    could be better than that?
