Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Overwhelmed — Where to Begin

I look at the desk around me and I don’t even know where to focus my eyes. There are papers and binders and to-do lists and a computer and the list goes on. Everything seems urgent. How do you know where to begin?

Add Overwhelmed

Maybe it’s not your desk. Maybe it’s your house or a big work project. Maybe it’s a closet or a job change. Anything can feel overwhelming when your focus is off. Sometimes we need to adjust our focus to find ourselves.

Sometimes we need to just pick one thing and put action behind it.

Even when it doesn’t feel perfect.

Waiting for the perfect plan or the best circumstances only feeds the all too hungry beast inside. We don’t realize that our quest to do it all right is the thing that feeds our paralysis, feeds that overwhelmed place inside of us that doesn’t know how to breathe never-mind what to do.

There are plenty of plans out there, books, websites, online classes, checklists. But there is a truth that each one of those tools lacks: YOU. Without you putting in the work, doing what works for you, all the books, websites, classes and checklists in the world will only be one more thing to overwhelm you.

And those feelings, the ones that leave you wanting to throw your hands in the air, you don’t have to feel them alone. Sometimes life happens. Sometimes circumstances overwhelm us and feel like they suffocate us. But you are not alone in them. God wants to walk through them with you. And maybe that’s exactly where we should begin.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Amen, gal. That’s how you eat an elephant – one bite at a time! Pick ONE thing. Good stuff.
