Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Why You Need to Let Go

Once upon a time, when I was a teacher, September was my favorite time of the year. Everything was new and fresh. New markers, clean desks, a neat schedule on the board. I loved September, for about two weeks.

And then the reality hit.

Let Go

The markers were already missing caps, the desks were full of papers that didn’t get brought home, and the schedule was ever-changing. The newness had worn off and I wasn’t sure what to do about it.

Unfortunately, I fought it. I thought if I could just get things back in order, just get a grip, and put everything in its right place it would be ok. The truth that I missed was that it was already ok.

Life isn’t meant to be lived as a static image. We are moving and changing and growing. All good things. Unless you want everything to stay just right. Then the change become painful and we put all our energy into shoving these moving pieces into a box expecting them to stay.

The only constant in life is change, and that make me so mad sometimes. I want change on my terms, when I’m ready and only in the way I think is best. You see, I think I’ve got it all figured out.

But that doesn’t account for one thing: I don’t know it all.

I know this may come as a surprise to some, but it’s true. We, in our humanity, do not know everything.

But we have one thing that we can hold onto: we know the One who does. He makes Himself accessible to us. He may not tell us all that’s to come, or always make everything perfect and tidy, but He does take care of us. Always.

embrace love

I’m trying to let go of my love of control to embrace the love of God. It’s hard to let go when your grip has been so tight for so long.

But maybe we’ll find we can color with crayons even if they’re not brand new and we can do great things even when everything isn’t going perfectly.

Embracing God requires us to let go of something else. What do you need to let go of today?

Thanks Ruthie! So grateful to know others who are fighting the battle alongside!

  2. Such a great read! I really was so crazy when my big kids were little…I remember how much the barbies always stressed me out. I would try to play with my daughter but I couldn’t focus until everything was put back exactly like it should have been….by then she had lost interest. Oh the moments I’ve missed by trying to be in control.

Isn’t it interesting how much we miss that we don’t even realize. Praying that we can all enjoy the moment more. Thanks for being here today!
