Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Words with God on Seeking Direction

The following is a real conversation between me and God. And when I say conversation, it wasn’t audible. It was in a frustrated, timer policed journal session. There is no formula. No right or wrong. Just me and God for a few minutes.

Writing is hard.

Seriously.

I love it, but I have no direction and I don’t know what to do.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, with prayer and PETITION, make your requests known to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.”

Maybe it’s time for some petition.

Come to me 100 times and see how you feel.

Seriously? This God??? Really? I thought you didn’t work in formulas.

I don’t. I work in faith. And maybe yours is a little weak. (He says gently so that I melt instead of fight).

I have no idea what I’m doing God.

You’re not always supposed to.

But….

{smile}

Ok.

This is an authentic conversation with God. It’s not an audible voice, but a Holy Spirit inner knowing. It surprises me and makes me remember all at once. I’ve missed this. Oh, how I’ve missed this. Maybe I’m not as unknown or untethered as I thought.

What areas are you struggling to find God in? Tell him. Even if you have to do it 100 times. And listen to that inner voice that responds. Remember, you can always tell if it’s really God because it won’t ever go against His word, it will never destroy you, and it will always be in love.

We can talk at God or talk with God. How do you talk with Him? How do you know He answers?

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. I have conversations like this with God too. Writing is hard. But I love when God gives us His Word to confirm what He has for us. A verse I’ve been clinging to lately is Philippians 1:6. I hope you have a great week and keep on writing!

What a beautiful truth to hold onto! Thank you for sharing! So wonderful to be on this journey with beautiful people!

  2. One of my favorite things about writing is when I sit down to gather my thoughts and just begin, having no idea, really, where I’m going to end up. It’s such a delightful surprise to discover what I’ve been thinking all along and what God has been trying to tell me when it all comes out clearly on the page.

Writing is such a beautiful space to hear God and see what He wants for us. I love when He reveals Himself in our words!

  3. 100 times. I love it. We can’t be reminded of this too much!

Thanks Lisa! I need to remind myself over and over!

  4. What a sweet post. <3 Thank you for sharing this beautiful interaction between you and your God. I love it. Oh how thankful I am for prayer–direct communication with our Maker. And Helper. And Provider. And Everything. — Thanks for sharing this, Becky and thanks for linking up at #ChasingCommunity today! xoxo

Thanks Brenda. Love those God interactions! 🙂

  5. Listening to God is becoming a rather popular topic in my head these days… Must be quiet.

    1. Becky Hastings

Ahhhhh yes…the need to be quiet! I’m not so good at that part!

  6. Becky, yes, this conversation sounds similar to my own. I love how He meets us where we are—in life, mind, and heart—and talks real to us. Great post!

He always surprises me with the simplest of things!

  7. Becky, thank you for sharing this conversation with God. I have had similar talks, and he speaks the truth in love to me too. Visiting from #graceandtruth

I love seeing how God speaks to each of us. Sometimes we expect a loud booming voice from above, but the ways He speaks are as diverse as we are!

  8. Writing IS hard, Becky! I teach a grade 3/4 class writing workshop – and a lot of it is trying to ease the anxieties they have gained from other teachers around writing – like ‘you should be able to write that all on your own now that you are in grade 3!’ – YIKES!
I’ve also had conversations with God like you had. They are precious and treasured in my heart.
Thanks for sharing on Grace and Truth. Your writing always blesses me (so don’t stop).

Thank you so much for your encouragement today Aimee! It means more than you know. Praying for God’s direction in my writing (and that I LISTEN!)
