Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Do You Have Proof of Life?

Do you ever get tired of the noise?

We can hit the mute button while surfing the internet, but the screen screams silent begging us to do, look, be. The internet is anything but quiet.

My letter to the internet captures my personal struggle with this amazing connectivity we have at our fingertips, but the part that still surprises me is the noise. We all know how the internet pulls at us, even in the best ways. It creates a constant buzz like the fan in my laptop and we get so used to it that we almost forget it’s there.

Almost.

I was shocked to realize how much I contribute to the noise. I add photos that scream for you to look at my beautiful people, my wonderful life. I tweet and update and share, pleading for you to notice something about me.

Social media has become a stage that we're all standing on fighting over the microphone. Click To Tweet

We put so much of ourselves out there for the world to see.

It’s just my friends I share with, we justify. How many of the people on our friends list would we have over for dinner? How many of them would we sacrifice something for?

Now it’s getting real.

Why do we share ourselves so freely on social media? What are we trying to prove?

Somehow the stage has become our attempts at proof.

  • Proving we’re here in this constantly spinning, buzzing world of 7 billion people.
  • Making our mark, like a carving in a tree so we remember this life.
  • Yelling louder than the person next to us that we may be the one who is heard.
  • Fabricating a generic version of our lives so we are more accepted.

We fill this web of connections with our silent screams, Pay attention to me!

And I sometimes wonder if it’s working.

So many of us are still lonely, striving, faking it. And the reality of this is so deflating. The more we yell into the void the more we miss the point.

If you had no friends, no followers, no likes, if you never gave another status update or perfectly filtered photo to the world, if you froze this very moment you would be loved.

Right now.

In your perfect and your mess.

In your lifetime of regret and achievement.

In your riches and your lack.

You are loved.

It’s so easy to forget in such a loud world. As you walk through life trying to figure out who you are and what you are called to do knowing this one truth can make all the difference.

Quiet your heart and remember today. And if you’re not sure if you understand the life you have in Jesus, I’d love to email with you. Leave me a comment and I will email you back.

You deserve to live knowing you are loved.
