Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Did You Miss the Boat?

I looked at the calendar squares of summer slipping away. I had all these great ideas and amazing plans. I even had a Pinterest board for SUMMER FUN. Scratch that. There was no Pinterest board.

I had the idea of making a Pinterest board so all my ideas would be in one place and we could tick them off our perfectly decorated Summer Bucket List that hangs with washi tape on the fridge.

But there is no board, no list, no washi tape. There’s just another page turning on the calendar and me wondering where I went wrong.

Do you ever feel like you missed your chance? What if I could tell you that you are not left alone on the shore? Would you believe me?

It’s easy to start a season full of enthusiasm and ideas. Riding the wave of anticipation and excitement we build up this idea of what the month or season will be but then the wave crashes and we’re left eating sand and covered in seaweed on the shore. (At least we made it to the beach, right?)

Thinking about life in terms of calendar pages feels neat and tidy, until we miss something. Then we feel like we’ve missed out, or worse yet, we’ve failed.

But God doesn’t operate by a calendar. He doesn’t look at the things we miss and change what He thinks of us. And I’m going to give you some shocking news here: God doesn’t expect our lives to fit perfectly on a Pinterest board or Instagram.

He loved us, created us, and sees everything we do (and don’t do). And His feelings for us never change.

Romans 8:38-39 from My Ink Dance

Go to Him. Remember who you are. And adjust the sails. You haven’t missed the boat, my friend. You only need to adjust course. It’s never to late.

Turn the calendar page, go do something, even if it isn’t on Pinterest and decorated in washi tape. It’s never too late to live a beautiful life.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Becky, loved this —> “You haven’t missed the boat, my friend. You only need to adjust course.” May we each make the adjustments as He shows us His course. Blessings!

Yes! We need that willingness, don’t we?!

  2. As I prepare for a new school year with my kids and have all these lofty plans and goals, this was the perfect post for me to read this morning. Thank you for the encouragement!

I’m so glad that it was God timed 🙂

  3. I just had these same thoughts yesterday as my church kicked off Operation Christmas Child. I walked in and took one look at the colorful shoe boxes and thought, what???? It’s still summer! You are so right, God doesn’t operate by a calendar or schedule or plans. I find I need to adjust my sails daily! Thank you for sharing.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! 🙂

  4. This was just what I needed this morning as we start a new school year. Thank you!

  6. I’m thankful God doesn’t restrict us to a calendar (even though I LOVE living with a calendar, ha). But calendars are only a tool to live better, not our actual life, so I appreciate how you encourage us that it’s not too late to do what God has planned for us.

    1. Becky Hastings

      It’s never too late! Amen!

  7. This is an important reminder. God isn’t on our calendar. Just a quick look at the Bible and we see that He takes the long view of things and is OK with allowing His servants (Moses, David, Joseph etc )to endure long periods of time … years… decades… in order to reveal his purpose.

You’re so right Karen! What an interesting thought when we pressure ourselves to have it all figured out immediately!

You so right! (And I don’t even know what washi tape is!) I still need to remind myself that life is full of interruptions. “Life is what happens when we’re making other plans.” I need to be content that we finished the painting project that sidetracked us for half the summer, and I’ve gotten to visit with three dear friends I’ve known for 35 – 60 years. I’ve conquered a few very long-awaited projects, and I’ve gone swimming a couple of times. I now see the summer’s been much better than I was thinking it was. Thanks, Becky!

I’m so glad you’re having a blessed summer! It was great to see you!

  9. Oh, friend–I have so been there. ((Hug)) I think we (or at least I) have such high expectations, that it creates inner disquiet when we can’t live by those standards. I’m learning to lay down the expectations and live the moments as they happen. — Love your last line…”It’s never too late to live a beautiful life.” <3 ((xoxo))

Isn’t it good to know that we’re not alone?! Laying down my own expectations is hard, but so worth it!

  10. Great thoughts, Becky. I’m thinking about my youngest teenager who just said, “This is the last day ever of Summer Band.” And I think … wow, that went quick. So I’m entering the last of the lasts with her and don’t want to miss anything. It’s different, though, with God. His plans, His purposes prevail in our lives. His mercies are new every morning. So thankful for this reminder that we don’t “miss the boat” on His plans for our lives. Visiting from Grace & Truth.

What a special time you’re in with your youngest! I pray you are able to treasure the moments with her and that you are reminded everyday that God’s plan is for you and it is good!

  11. That’s the reminder I needed to read today. Amen! God’s timetable is different from ours. His is so much better.

    1. Becky Hastings

      Hi is always better! Amen!

  12. Thanks for this great reminder, friend! Blessings!
