Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

5 Things Bringing Me Joy Today

I will be the first to admit, I wait for joy to find me. Even with my word-of-the-year and lofty goals I find myself walking through life waiting for joy to flash with neon signs and arrows so I know it’s arrived.

Today I chose something different. I chose to seek out joy. I chose not to wait for it to find me in it’s perfection. I went out to find it in ordinary, everyday life.

You can find joy right now, right where you are. Don't miss these 5 things bringing me joy today!

Pencils

Yes, it’s insanely simple, but it makes me so very happy. School supplies always have. Especially when I was teaching. Setting up for the new year was my favorite part. Hands down.

Flowers

I’m a hydrangea girl. I love them, partly because of their beauty and partly because they’re so low maintenance (at least the way I grow them). But mine had turned. They were no longer bright bold blues mingled with soft purples. Yet somehow, there was still so much beauty to be found.

Progress

My first draft of my first novel has been sitting on a shelf for over a year because I’m too afraid of the editing process. I’m tired of being afraid of process. I’m proud of what I’ve done and celebrating progress today.

Apples

You can get them all year round, but they may not be worth celebrating all year. Fall though, now that’s another story. A delicious apple in season makes me so very happy.

Calendar

September is a great time for a reset, and I love getting my new calendar every year. Blank with possibility and full of hope, this calendar is my absolute favorite because I just can’t let go of a family wall calendar. And this one has tons of space, pages you can write on and big squares!

Do you want more joy? Where is one place you can see joy right now?

Sharing words at #raralinkup and with these great writers today!

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. What a lovely list, Becky! I am SO with you on the pencils. I find a strange contentment when all the pencils in our house have been freshly sharpened. 😉 And the apples! I was just telling my girls that this is the best time of year for apples, because they are just so much more, well, appley right now than any other time. May all autumn’s joys be yours! Stopping by from #TuesdayTalk!

      Sharpened pencils! YES!!! 🙂

  2. Hey there, Becky. I like your list. Congratulations on finishing that first rough draft! You’re ahead of me. 😉 I still have 2 chapters to go on mine. And I love fall apples too. I’ll start eating one daily when peaches finally disappear here. For now, it’s a peach every day.

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks Betsy! You’re almost done with yours! Yay! Keep writing! 🙂

    1. Becky Hastings

      Learning to embrace progress!

  5. Wonderful list of joys found. 🙂

    I too love stationery supplies!

    Congratulations on writing a novel.

    Blessings,

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks Karen! And what is it about stationary supplies?!

  6. Love you photos and succinct words. We have a wonderful Christian Writers group here where we have successful published novelists. This has been a very positive experience for all. Many blessings to you ❤️

    1. Becky Hastings

That’s fantastic that you have a Christian Writers group! I haven’t found anything locally, but will be heading to my first conference next month and it’s in CT, so I’m hopeful!

  7. This post so made me smile. Pencils – my writing tool of choice!! I love them! And on my list are hydrangeas and apples. It is amazing the joy we can find in little things, if we are truly willing to look for joy. May you day be joy-filled & overflowing!

    1. Becky Hastings

Awwww…thanks Joanne! Hope your day is filled with joy as well!

  8. Congratulations on progress with your novel. I also love flowers and get much joy from them.

    1. Becky Hastings

Thank you Miriam! Hope you get to see some lovely flowers today 🙂

  9. Becky, I love how the simplest things can bring the most joy! (Like pencils. Pencils!!) Good job with the novel … keep up the good work. And if you have any advice about getting hydrangeas to bloom, I’d love to hear it. Mine seem content to just grow leaves. 🙂

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks Lois! As for advice about hydrangeas…I’m not much help. The only thing I did learn is that it’s better not to prune or cut the plant. Something with the flowers for next year are already in process on those branches. At any rate, the leaves are a lovely green 🙂

  10. I find joy in flowers, nature, sunshine, water, and a blank page! Thank you for sharing your joy list! Your words are inspiring! We all need joy!

  11. I love your list- it makes a big difference when we can find joy in the little things. And well done on the progress with your novel!

    1. Becky Hastings

      Thanks Lesley!

  12. I love these joys, Becky. I think I often forget those simple joys. Good for you in picking up your novel again! Right now as I look out my office window, a mourning dove is taking a bird bath and several bees are buzzing around the flowers. A butterfly just fluttered by. God’s creation always gives me joy. 🙂 Blessings and hugs to you!

    1. Becky Hastings

What beautiful joy you’ve shared today!

  13. Love the reminder that good things are right there for us. Hydrangeas are my favorite, especially blue ones!

    1. Becky Hastings

      Aren’t they lovely?!

  14. Oh, Becky–we have so much in common. 🙂 Love school supplies and apples and am still among the dying breed who use a wall calendar. 🙂 — But, not creative enough to read or write fiction. Good for you! So glad you’re dusting off that draft and embracing the process. Can’t wait to see what God does next with it. 🙂 ((xoxo))

    1. Becky Hastings

So fun to see how much we have in common! You’re such a beautiful encourager Brenda! I’m excited to see how our paths cross more 🙂

  15. I’m with you on the pencils/school supplies. I love anything to write on or write with. I’ve been a student and teacher for many years. Great article. Blessings to you and yours! Marie

    1. Becky Hastings

Isn’t there something amazing about new pencils and school supplies?!

  16. Hi, Becky! Love the things that bring you joy. I wish I could grow hydrangeas. Mine die … yours are lovely! Searching out joy is great! Thanks for the encouragement to do so! Have a beautiful week!

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks Dianne! It’s funny how some things work for some people. I’m no gardener, but hydrangeas work for me. Other plants…not so much!

  17. We like a lot of the same things. Apples, not so much!

    1. Becky Hastings

No apples? My family has eaten 5 pounds in 2 days! lol

  18. I love apples and school supplies too! I love fall! Right now, today I enjoyed my plush carpet in my bedroom because it allowed my baby boy to roll and roll and he laughed and laughed!

    1. Becky Hastings

Yes! Hold onto that moment! It will bring you joy every time you remember it!

  19. I chose “Joy” as my one year a few years ago, because I too wait for it to find me; rather than I find it. Today, I took the day off from work…call it a mental health day. I wrote a few blog posts. Something that brings me joy is writing but I have put it off because I am working full time now and felt it was too hard to do both. It’s been like I am working for the weekend, waiting for joy to come on Saturday and Sunday. Good luck on your book!

    1. Becky Hastings

So glad you found joy in writing again today! And we all need mental health days now and again 🙂

  20. Such a cute post! And a great way for us to remember to find joy in everything – even the simpler things. And to be thankful in all things. Thanks for sharing, Becky!

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks friend! Sometimes we just need to get back to the heart of things 🙂

  21. Great way to keep happy with the smallest things. 🙂

    1. Becky Hastings

They’re everywhere when we start looking 🙂
