Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Do more

Sometimes I feel like life is shouting at me. Do more. Give more. Be more. The to-do lists are endless and the pressure is always pressing. Be the coordinator. Volunteer. Bake. Show up. Donate. Teach.

And don’t forget to smile.

That’s the part that gets me. The fake. The plastered smile that we’re so afraid to let go of. How many things do we do just to keep up appearances? How many layers of pretend do we heap on our shoulders that only make it harder to find the real smile?

And add to it the holidays…

The decorations, baking, parties, Christmas cards, perfect party dress, perfect presents, staying in budget, glamorous food, and the list goes on and on.

What if we decided to get real and enjoy this month leading up to Christmas?

Think for a moment about a single word that you want to describe your month. Maybe it’s peace or joy. Maybe it’s family or fun or service. Think of any word that you want to be the ultimate goal for this holiday season.

Now think of that word as your filter.

If you chose peace take everything on that endless to do list and run it through the filter of peace. Ask yourself, “Will going to this party or baking dozens of cookies, or having perfectly wrapped gifts bring me peace?” If the answer is no, let it go.

You have a say in how your month is going to go. Pick a word and let that guide all of your decisions. Sometimes doing more is the very thing that makes us feel like less. Instead, let’s do less so we can enjoy more!

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.
