Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Looking for Your Calling

God never called me to a beautiful house or a perfect wardrobe.

He never said to make sure I had the smartest, most well-mannered, star athlete kids.

He never told me that I needed to drive a certain car or even have lots of friends.

He never said I should make tons of money and just happen to be the kind of beautiful you see in magazines.

He never called me to any of that. I did that on my own. I listened to the world’s calling, my first world kind of world, that is.

So that whole “In the world but not of the world” — well I was shooting for all the wrong things.

No perfect house or hair or job can get me any closer to God’s call for me. Seeking that only gets me closer to the world.

But choosing to forgive when the person you love hurts you. Or giving the homeless person a dollar even if you don’t know what they’ll do with it. Inviting people over to have dessert even if the house is a mess and the cookies are from the store.

These show love. These are living out your calling in the everyday real.

You can ask God about what He wants you to do for a job or with your time. He’ll never turn you away and you’re never a bother.  But He’s already given us our calling.

Now it’s our job to live it out.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. What a beautiful reminder of what truly calling from God is. I love the quote: Calling is not what you do it’s what God wants you to be. I loved this!

  2. This is a post I need to print out and tape to my bathroom mirror or over the kitchen sink (but I’ll keep it modern and pin it instead 😉 ). Thank you for this reminder… I’m looking forward to this series!

  3. What an inspirational series to discuss, thank you for sharing your insight! Too many times I think we all get caught up in the day-to-day rush of life to stop & consider what is most important. Your series will be a wonderful reminder to us all, thank you 🙂
