Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

What You Need

I know exactly what you need. Yes, you. How can I possibly know that? It’s simple.

The answer is the same for all of us.

I keep coming back to one thing in my life. It applies to my feelings, my work, my family, my faith, my friendships….all of it. And I can confidently say it applies to you as well.

The one thing you need is Jesus.

Before you dismiss me, thinking that’s just too simple or you already know that, I challenge you to think about this.

You don’t need another Bible Study or 10 step book.

You don’t need another diet or exercise plan.

More friends or a spouse or a better job or a perfect church are never going to be the answer.

These are all great things. Tools that can be used. People that can show you the way. A body of believers that will encourage you. All good.

But you don’t need them.

There is no bible study or mate or job or church that will save you. And the truth is that we all need saving. Click To Tweet

All too often we grab hold of socially acceptable methods to fix ourselves. We teeter on the line of believing we are never going to be enough yet hoping we have what it takes to be more.

God never asked us to be more.

He asks us to follow Him.

He tells us to love others.

It’s that simple. Everything we do should flow out of those two commands. And if you don’t like the idea of them being a command, the truth is you have a choice. You can spend your life doing, being, striving. Or you can spend your life following Jesus and loving others. You always have a choice: your way or God’s way.

Eyes on Jesus

The hard times seem easier to believe this. When we’re at the end of ourselves and life reminds us that we are not in control, we are so desperate for help we look to Jesus.

And when things are wonderful, over-the-top great, we are filled with such joy we often praise God without even realizing it.

But in those gray times, those murky middles and in-betweens when life is ok, but could be better…the daily ups and downs of responsibility and real-life and real people…Well, those are the times we seem to think we should pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and get it done. Those are the times where we are on autopilot to fix our lives instead of fix our eyes on Jesus.

So, yes. I see exactly what you need. Because it’s the same thing we all need. In every mountain and valley, in every in-between place, we need Jesus.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Amen, Becky. I wholeheartedly agree. There are so many things in this world that try to nudge their way into first in our lives – so many voices that cry to be heard over Gods. He truly is our sufficiency, and it’s amazing what happens when we are intentional about choosing Him first – beautiful, beautiful things! Great reminder today, friend.
