Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

5 Ways to Help Someone Who Is Struggling – Part 2

Knowing how to help someone who is going through something hard is challenging. We often feel like we say the wrong thing or don’t want to be a bother. So we do nothing. But doing nothing doesn’t help.

The second post in a series, this is something you can really do and it makes such a difference.

5 ways to help someone who is struggling

Encourage

Sometimes we don’t know the best way to do this. We know that it will be helpful, but figuring out how to encourage someone in a difficult place can leave me feeling paralyzed. The answer? Just do something, but make sure it really is for that person rather than your ego. Yes, this sounds harsh, but you don’t want your encouragement to bring the person down, you want it to lift her up.

The best ideas are things that the person doesn’t have to think about too hard and that are convenient for you to follow through with. Text messages are a favorite, but cards or a phone message are good, too. Flowers brighten any day. This video from The Mighty has some great ideas for text messages that make a difference for Special Needs Parents and anyone who is struggling!

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I’m here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Yes. No point in giving them negative feedback. They have enough on their plate so to speak.

    Straightforward and wise. 🙂

  3. Such a sweet video and good thoughts on your part for how we can help those who struggle. Moms sometimes feel all alone in their needs, and we need to lift each other up!

Thanks for sharing this with us on Tuesday Talk. Very sweet.

Thanks so much Ruthie! Encouraging one another makes such a difference in how we face the hard things in front of us!

  4. The encourage text is a huge one in my life. Most of my friends work outside the home so it brings us together when otherwise we couldn’t. I am just seeing that you had been posting a series (oops!) I am so behind on reading my friend’s posts. I wish I could read each and every one. This is great though, Becky and I hope you are doing well!

Hi Meg! It’s great to find little things that make a difference, isn’t it? And for the record….this is a series I wrote awhile back that I’m re-sharing! You’re not behind at all 🙂
