Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Are You Looking For A Guide?

When I’m searching for meaning and inspiration behind these words I type, I find myself face to face with the simple. Looking to fall in love again I seek out words in their purest form before I try so hard and shine them up for you to read.

I find myself back at Five Minute Friday.

Here’s the deal….write for five minutes, one word for inspiration, no rules, no edits. This week’s word: GUIDE

Are you looking for answers? I know something that will help.

Sometimes I feel like I’m silently begging. I’m sitting at the foot of a throne I can’t see the top of, can’t even see past the post at my feet. And I beg and I beg from a deep part of my soul.

“Lord, please guide me.”

I don’t even know what I need, what I’m looking for.

A map.

Neon signs.

Instead I’m met with quiet. And I get so discouraged. I want answers but when you can’t see past your own hands it’s hard to see the hand of God.

But I keep coming back.

And I think that’s okay.

Because maybe the desire for a Guide is not in the answer, but in the seeking. If He gave us the highlighted map with pitfalls and shortcuts, would we even come back to Him?

Our consumer practicality is searching for the guide as a noun, a thing, an answer to a problem. But God is no consumer, and He values us so much more than the practicality of human understanding. Maybe it’s time we realized that guide is a verb, wrapped in a person. A process designed to keep us close to Him.

And that’s where I stop. Stop writing, but more than that, stop striving. May we reach up and hold the hand of the One who guides is in love, even when we can’t see past our own hands.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  2. How often can we all say “I don’t even know what I need” – but He promises to guide – what a blessing!!

Hope you have a great weekend. Your FMF neighbor this week!

      Thanks Jennifer!

  3. Hi Becky, loved the line “when you can’t see past your own hands it’s hard to see the hand of God”. Thank you for your post today, moving away from guide as a noun means we get closer. Blessings, Julie
