Discovering Extraordinary Grace in an Ordinary Life

Do You Feel Disconnected?

Everything was perfect. The band was playing. The lights were dim and filled with people worshiping. My kids were behaving. I was singing the words. It was the perfect setup to worship God.

Except I couldn’t.

Do you ever feel disconnected from God? I have 2 things to tell you: You're not alone and I can help. Head over to My Ink Dance now to see what I discovered that made a difference!

It didn’t matter that I was in the perfect environment. Everything I did seemed to fall flat. I couldn’t connect with the words coming out of my own mouth.

I longed to feel something. For the words to hit their mark, not to prove myself, but to hit their mark in my soul. All I could feel was disconnect. A disconnect with God.

And if I was honest, it had been that way for a long time.

Somehow I knew i needed to fix it. I got out my familiar tools. I dusted off my Bible, got out a devotional, added it to my to do list. And staring at those tools I knew it was all wrong.

When my husband and I are not connecting well there is no book, guideline or date on the calendar that is going to fix it. I need to spend time with Him. It’s the same way with God.

The only way I could fix my disconnect with God was by being with Him.

I needed to shift my thinking from a To-Do list spirituality to a posture of connection and spending time with God. Along the way I am learning the things that help me connect with God in the middle of real life. And I want to help you connect with God, too.

About Becky Hastings

I am emotional and logical. I am strong and dependent. I am a juxtaposition of head and heart exploring it all through writing. And in all my mixed-up ways I am loved. I'm here to tell you that you are, too. Just the way you are.

  1. Signing up! Great topic : ) I lean toward the to-do listing over the actual important being-with as well.

    1. Becky Hastings

So glad you’re joining in! I can’t wait to hear how God meets you 🙂

  2. You describe that disconnect so well. We forget that going through the motions doesn’t get us anywhere. Sitting intentionally with God opens our hearts and minds to deepening our relationship with Him. Blessings on your week.

    1. Becky Hastings

Thanks Mary. It is all about that intentional heart. Not perfect. Not a formula. Not following rules. Just intentionally being with Him.

  3. I remember a few times when my kids were all little and I was homeschooling the whole crew from the Pit of Overwhelmed Mum-dom, I would write on my calendar one word: BE! On that day, I would try to just do the essentials and focus on Being: being in the presence of God; being a mum; being a person.
Hmm . . . maybe it’s time for me to do that again soon!

    1. Becky Hastings

      I think it’s a fantastic idea that I just may steal! 😉

  4. Dwell in His presence. Surrender to Him. That’s my plea for this year.

    1. Becky Hastings

Yes! I hope you check out DWELL! I think you would really enjoy it!

  5. This is wonderful advice, Becky: “The only way I could fix my disconnect with God was by being with Him.” Being in his presence is a special kind of connectedness that we can get no other way.

    1. Becky Hastings

Isn’t it funny how we try? At least I do. I fill it up with so many other things, but if I just went to Him I would be satisfied!

  6. It is so true. There are times the familiar just won’t bring the re-connect. God desires for us to just come and be with Him. Him alone. Him – for the sheer joy of being with Him. No other reason. No expectations. May these five days of devotionals bless many!

    1. Becky Hastings

You are absolutely right Joanne! Just be!

  7. First of all, I LOVE THE IMAGE YOU USED. So perfect. Second of all…”she who dwells in the secret place of the most high God shall abide …” Psalm 91.1 DWELLS, not visits, not swings by for coffee, but LIVES there. HANGS THERE. ALL.THE.TIME. Never say amen. DWELL. Great post Becky and I am sure great study. xo

    1. Becky Hastings

Yes, yes, yes! You are so right! Never say Amen!

  9. I have definitely had those times of feeling disconnected and I think it’s true that, just like any relationship, making time to spend with God is so important if we want that to grow and deepen.

    1. Becky Hastings

Absolutely! We need to invest ourselves in HIM

  12. You are spot on with this. I have so been there. It’s not about a magic formula, it’s just about reconnecting on a personal level. The one-on-one time is something you can’t replace or interchange.

    1. Becky Hastings

Absolutely Heather! I hope you join the study. I really think you will enjoy it!

  13. Yay! Such a great resource, friend. — P.S.) I owe you an email! xoxo

    1. Becky Hastings

I’m so glad you think so! 🙂

  14. I love your honesty. Truly, the reason behind approaching Scripture needs to be to connect with God and lean in closer to His will!

    1. Becky Hastings

Yes, it is all about that connection!

  15. Yes – for sure, the only way to fix the disconnect is to spend time with our Heavenly father. To be still. To be present and to simply be with Him.

    1. Becky Hastings

Be present! I love that! How often are we there but not really there? God wants us so deeply.
